Raises Concern Amid rising concerns about possible reductions in resources available to local military veterans, Columbia County Commission Chair Tony Hyde has offered to host a meeting with Congressman David Wu, State Senator Betsy Johnson and Representative Brad Witt to discuss local needs and available resources. “Those who have served our country in the military are entitled to not only our thanks and respect, but are also entitled under law to certain social, medical and psychological support. Many of us including Congressman Wu, Senator Johnson and Representative Witt are concerned that our veterans are being short-changed,” Commissioner Hyde said. A coordinated approach involving Federal, State and Local government officials is strongly supported by Congressman Wu, Senator Johnson and Representative Witt. “Ensuring that veterans receive the support and benefits they are entitled to will require the cooperation and support of all of us” said Senator Johnson. “We are anxious to understand clearly the needs and how best to meet those needs,” she added. Representatives of provider agencies and veterans groups are being invited to offer their observations and suggestions to better meet the needs of a growing veteran population. The meeting which is open to the public will be held at the Columbia County Courthouse in St. Helens on Wednesday, February 23, 2005 at 4:30PM.
